I’m inspired by this

Once a month, the designers at my work meet up for an hour and a half to talk shop. This month’s homework was to bring along things that inspire us. I don’t have a favourite designer that I look up to. When my head gets in its creative space, it’s more a soup of many things that have stuck with me over the years. My show & tell was the above collage plus explanations:

Knife sharpening video

Found a video on knife sharpening. The internet is so helpful! First a guy on reddit gives me a 101 on sharpening tools, then this easy-to-use website gives me an idea of what kind of range I can look at, and now some Dartmouth spoon carver with a lovely accent is showing me exactly how I should go about not fucking things up.

Carba-Tec in Balcatta sells Jelutong, the wood I’ve been looking for. I was planning to go on Saturday to check it out, but if I have to drive all the way there, I may as well pick up a sharpening stone too so I don’t have to drive all the way back again, and I don’t think I can afford wood AND stone together this weekend.

If only we lived on Catan; then I could trade some sheep and wheat.

Lovely showtunes

I love musicals. Plays, movies, tv episodes – music makes things fun. Just wanted to share some lovely showtunes.

GOT WOOD? HA HA HA

Yesterday, still reeling from the enjoyment of doing the fence stuff, I decided to look into wood whittling. I’ve been curious since childhood, but it always seemed the sort of thing only other people do. Site after site later, I found myself at the precipice of seriously considering this hobby.

Who am I kidding. My mind was made up as soon as Google loaded. I would need to find a soft, carve-friendly timber like basswood (also known as linden or lime), birch or jelutong. I would need a knife. This is the knife I chose. I’m just about to order it. I’m nervous.

I don’t know anything about wood. Or knives. Or using knives on wood. I’m scared. What if I do it wrong and cut all my fingers off and die of wood cancer arrrrrrrrggggg…

ARG. Positive thoughts. Positive thinking. It will be fine. It will be fun. I don’t have any aspirations to get good, I just want to have a bit of fun. That’s okay. I’m okay with if I just have a couple of hacks, decide it’s too hard then pack it all away in a memory box until my sister wants heirlooms for her grandchildren. At least I’ll have tried it. At least I’ll know what it’s like, this thing that’s so fascinating and rustic.

Okay, I’m ready. Yay new hobby! ^___^

Random guy sitting on street corner in #eastperth magazine and burnt paper around him. Oh, just laid down for a kip.
