A less slow Saturday afternoon with worms

image

I’VE GOT WORMS!!

Finally hauled ass to Bunnings and bought me a worm cafe. :) Just a couple days to go before my little wormies settle in and are ready to eat. For anyone wishing to set one up too, you’ll need to get:

  • The Tumbleweed worm cafe
  • A starter box of worms (1200 worms)
  • A worm blanket

All up, I think I spent about $160 on everything.

The cafe starts out 1-storey. It’ll be a few weeks before there’s enough build-up to need an upstairs.

A slow Saturday morning with cat.

Actually, it’s afternoon now. I spent the morning sleeping, despite best-laid plans to enjoy a Boca Lupo, clean the kitchen and play some games. Maybe get a worm farm from Bunnings.

Just as I think to get up, a cat settles at my feet, telling me to stay put for a little longer. Damn cats. Always thwarting mice and men.

Delicious meat pie

image

The meat pie has remained my favourite low budget, low effort Australian cuisine since my family moved here 17 years ago. I know it cops a lot of flack in this country for being a mass produced “snouts and arseholes” dish, but you know, in some cultures, snout and arsehole are delicacies.

Throughout uni, my loving mother would bring me a midnight snack of a square Bakewell pie with tomato sauce, accompanied by a mug of warm Milo in the very indulgent style she makes it. Hence, the meat pie is today for me a symbol of home, comfort and family.

Other pies may temporarily reign for their variety and novelty. The steak and kidney pie from Lawley’s is an awesome treat to the palette, and when has a Mrs Mac’s potato pie ever led one astray? But cheesy beef, chicken & veg, Spud Deluxe and all the puff pastry in the world can’t replace the good old simple plain meat pie.

Two days to Census

Tuesday night is Census Night!

And the list of recognised religions in Australia is huge – view the publicly available spreadsheet. No Pastafarian or Jedi, but there are cool names like ‘Holy Rollers’, ‘Wee Free’ and ‘Decide when older’. I like that being a wino is lumped in the same category as personal beliefs, and I like that that category contains the whole spectrum from loving idealism to ironic smartarsedness – it’s 0002, if you wanted to looksee.

Lots of jazz face

Lots of jazz face at the Ellington in Northbridge. Never been to a jazz club before – glad I came. We’re watching a group called Jamie Oehler’s Blowfish. The female singer has an amazingly rich voice. Cocktails are tasty. That is all.

Brass Monkey Wednesday conedy

image

The Brass Monkey in Northbridge (Perth) host a comedy night every Wednesday. I’d always pictured amateur comedy to be shit, but I guess awesome comedians started somewhere. This is a pretty good setup. Recommended. :)

Random guy sitting on street corner in #eastperth magazine and burnt paper around him. Oh, just laid down for a kip.
