Mint day 15 – the king is dead

image

Dead. Brown. Water brown. RIP, little sprig.

Swee’s window mint is alive and well, though! :) Long live the king!

Where to find ramen in Perth

My old ramen guide is out of date now. I’m really pleased that it’s gotten heaps easier to find good ramen in Perth. The whole izakaya thing has a lot of appeal; so casual, so tasty. Anyway, here’s my list of Perth ramen noodle shops, all personally reviewed and enjoyed by me and my friends.

Sick again, but not defeated

image

I hear someone playing League of Legends upstairs. Me so jelly. :( I’m sick and I’ve decided it’s man flu cos it feels awfuller than usual and I really thought I was tougher than a virus.

Being sick has come with all sorts of sick feelings – anxiety, self-doubt, loneliness, depression, fed up-ness and mild cantankerousness – but cousin Joshua called tonight just as my cold&flu tablets took. I don’t like talking on the phone, but it’s different with my cousins. :) I’m feeling much better now.

For anyone who needs a reference for their own sick, this flu started as sharp stomach pains on day 1. Day 2 featured dull abdomen ache and evil toilets. Day 3 saw onset of sharp headaches. Reprieve on day 4, but today (day 5) has body aches and more typical flu symptoms. Doctor said it’s “probably just a virus”; I’ve gone for an h. pylori and thyroid blood test just to be sure.

Stay healthy, friends. Rest if you’re sick and sip water.

Mint day 7

image

Day 7. Still no roots. Have removed the lower leaves on instruction from a friend whose done it before. Apparently my cutting is too small – I hope that’s not true because I could have sworn the internet told me this is an acceptable size.

I’ll give it til day 21.

My drilling adventure

This is me in my drilling outfit. Yes, I said drilling outfit. Today, I decided to try turning little food bowls into little flower pots. Turns out if you have the patience for manual labour, this can be a cost-effective way to be creative and cute with potted plant stuff.

Garden, eating and happiness – the links as promised

Hello, here are the links I’ve been promising (here and here), arranged by topic:

Growing mint indoors

Apparently mint is actually a weed. A delicious weed, but still a weed, which can survive in all sorts of conditions – even in the meh light of an office. This bodes well for my mint in a cup.

Miscellaneous cool plant and garden stuff

Atkins and low carb stuff

Happiness stuff

Another fine Caturday

image

This was possibly the first Saturday in ages where I’ve gotten up before noon. Came home early last night to set up my greenhouse and play League of Legends. I’m worried i’ve become boring; not been up for long haul drinking lately, and its nice to have something constructive to obsess over constructively.

Mint day 3 – still nothing

image

Still nothing. Tips of leaves are tuning black.

Mint Day 1

image

I’m trying to grow a mint cutting in a cup of water. Shut up, the internet says it works, all right? We’ll see, though. I’m skeptical as I used filtered water and sit nowhere near a window. Funko and Swee are performing additional experiments in other areas of the office.

Will post mint links later.

1, 2, 3 – Parsley!

At least, I’m pretty sure it’s parsley. I forget.

Just before the trip to Eagle Bay, I planted some tiny seeds in pots. The packet said they would take weeks to germinate – I expected 6 weeks, but the weather must be good for these plants, because it only took 3 weeks for this little sprout to poke through. Yay! Not insta-death!

I don’t know why I planted seeds. I actually dislike gardening. The idea of soil needing health warnings grosses me out, I don’t fancy the smell, I get hayfever, I don’t like getting grubby hands because I rub my eyes a lot. When I bought potting mix for the worm farm, I figured I’d want to do something with the rest of it. Now I have a sprout. And some new flowerpots, bought today, with an even bigger quantity of potting mix.

Got some watermelon seeds from Waldecks too, and I have a few Swan River Daisy seed cards left over from a July promotion at work. Hobby day tomorrow, then. :)

Yummy chocolate brownie

image

This was unexpected. Decided on a salad and dessert for Village lunch today. I had my eye on the apple & rhubarb crumble when Luke, one of the owners, sprung his personal recommendation of the warm chocolate brownie.

OH MY GOD. I’m pretty sure this has ruined other brownies for me forever. It’s so gooey and hot and rich. Highly recommended. Probably best to share with someone so you can talk about it around other people who haven’t tried it yet. Me likey. :)

Being gay in Eagle Bay

image

Gay as in happy.

We’ll be home soon, so I’m making the most of today by blogging from bed; so exciting what.

There’s a lovely field of lillies behind the place we’re staying. Somebody’s property, no doubt, but apparently trespassing is usually ok here so long as you don’t damage anything or leave gates open. I took a few photos of the field, went on a poo hunt (found cow, roo and a mysterious long poo) and checked a few clover patches for a 4-leaf. No luck.

I’ve cooked satay, drank mead, lay in a hammock with a bloody Mary, written a shit mystery novel in my head, met a border collie named Bonnie, watched my mates put out a small fire, eaten some delicious chilli and munched on yummy raisin cookies.

The shower is going off in the next room. I think everyone is getting up. Would be nice to go somewhere for lunch. Maybe a brewery or something.

Was apprehensive at first about going home, but I feel pretty un-stressed out here, I think I can handle what’s waiting for me. Working late’s not so bad when nice restaurants are so close, and you’ve accepted that’s what you’ll be doing for awhile. I’m even a bit excited, because we work near a Crust pizza. Mmm, peking duck pizza…

Argh. I am off. Time to get something to eat.

Random guy sitting on street corner in #eastperth magazine and burnt paper around him. Oh, just laid down for a kip.
