Permacomputing is an approach to technology that draws inspiration from the field of of permaculture. It considers computing in the context of its natural environment, espouses sustainable practices, and encourages creativity in the face of limitations.

The principles of permacomputing are (paraphrased from permacomputing.net):

• Care for life (ie. Earth and people)
• Care for the chips (bc manufacturing consumes a lot of energy and resources)
• Small, simple and flexible
• Prepare for the worst, but be open to good things happening
• Robust foundations
• Amplify awareness
• Expose information (not the personal kind, of course)
• Adapt to changes
• Everything has a place (appreciate diversity)

Note that where permaculture could potentially create permanent ecosystems within nature, permacomputing is of course beholden to the limitations of hardware integrity. There's only so many times you can recharge a battery or write to a hard drive, for example, so given current technology the best we can hope for is prolonging the life of our computing tools until more sustainable hardware becomes available.
