Five interesting links for May 2023

Hello delightful deer 🦌

There's been a lot happening lately. Mostly family stuff, but a heap of interesting readings as well. Naturally, a lot of it finds its way to my thinkylinks, but here are a handful of standouts I found especially thought-provoking:

Capitalism and convenience are making us lonely
I was reminded of this article upon overhearing someone complain about a friend offering to pick them up from the airport. Granted it could have just been ingratitude in action, but their rationale was that with traffic and parking, it's just more sensible and practical to summon an Uber. Jury's still out for me, but what do you think? Would you miss those ice-breaking catchups in the car with a friend, or nah?

You Probably Want to Know About "Alternative Front Ends"
Alternative front ends are websites that grant you access to the content you want on social media platforms, but strip out the ads, tracking and recommended links first. Article author Justin Hanagan calls them a "major new defensive weapon in the battle for our attention".

Why you shouldn't try to be a morning person
The tl;dr here is that there's only so much you can change about how nature made you before it starts doing more harm than good (physiologically and psychologically speaking). The article also mentions that even if you succeed in changing, you might not actually achieve the touted benefits that incentivised you to try in the first place.

Flowershow
For anyone on the Obsidian bandwagon, Flowershow is a free, open-source, no-code alternative to Obsidian Publish. It's tempting, as Obsidian has been wonderful to work with as a digital notetaking and knowledge management tool, but I'm personally not ready to step away from 11ty for my website just yet.

Simple Tools Foster Complex Uses
Something twigs about this short blog post from Analog Office, especially that bit about needing to use lots of apps. I'm not sure about the author's example of smashing contacts and budgets together in the same notebook (how hellish would that be), but I do find a quiet joy in my analogue tools and being able to tell my diary from my planner by touch alone.

Now, I'm asking you: What's one interesting thing you've read lately?

Hit reply and tell me.

Sandy.
